MANITOBA SOARING COUNCIL

2011 MSC On-Line Soaring Contest

October 12  2010 to October 11  2011

The Manitoba Soaring Council sanctions the contest. To participate, pilots must first enter the Canadian Decentralized National Competition.

General information and rules can be found at:

Rules for the MSC On-Line Soaring Contest:

The rules for the contest are simple. They will be exactly the same as for the OLC Competition except:

·        The competitor must be a member of a gliding organization that belongs to the Manitoba Soaring Council.

·        The start or finish point of claimed flights must be in Manitoba.

Pilots are reminded to claim their out of province flights in the region in which they are flown. For example, Invermere flights must be claimed for the BC/AB region.

A GPS logger is required to record flights to be submitted to the contest. GPS flight loggers conforming to the Canadian Decentralized National Competition (CDNC) will be mandatory. The Bonniere NMEA recorder is approved for use in the CDNC but not the World wide international competition. Canadian entrants with FAI approved loggers are automatically included in the Worldwide contest.

The OLC server does all scoring automatically when the flight is submitted. Club results are also scored for the OLC League where applicable. Participating pilots are responsible for submitting their own flights.

There is a zero tolerance policy on airspace violations for the MSC-OLC. Any flights entering controlled airspace without permission will be disqualified from the contest. Each pilot is expected to self-assess their flights and act as their own referee. Pilots submitting flights are responsible for ensuring that they have not violated controlled airspace prior to submitting their flight claim. Pilots who discover that they have violated controlled airspace after submitting their flight claim are responsible for deleting the flight claim using the OLC web page procedure.

2010 MSC On-Line Soaring Contest

October 14  2009 to October 11  2010

2010 was the eighth year for the Manitoba Soaring Council On-Line Contest. Each pilot’s best six flights were used to calculate their International, North American, Canadian, SK/MB Regional, and Manitoba scores.

OLC Classic Contest Rules

After the flight start point, up to five turn points and the finish point are determined on the flight trace, so that the scored points for the flights are maximized. Scores for each pilot are tabulated below for the MSC-OLC, CDNC, CDNC SK-MB Regional, Aerokurier International, and North American contests. The minimum score must be 50 points; flights with fewer points are displayed in the daily list, but are not scored. The raw points are multiplied by 100 and then divided by the applicable DAeC Index. The resulting final points are rounded to two decimal digits.

1 raw point per kilometre is granted for the distance from start point around three turnpoints to the fourth turnpoint. For the distance between the fourth turnpoint to the fifth turnpoint 0.8 raw points per kilometre are granted. For the distance between fifth turnpoint and the finish point 0.6 raw points per kilometre are granted. Turnpoint four and five, as well as the finish point can be the same.

OLC Classic Novice Category Contest Rules

In 2010, the Manitoba Soaring Council changed the rules for the MSC Jeff Tinkler Memorial Trophy to match the revised CDNC OLC Novice Class competition rules. A Novice is defined as a pilot with less than 200 hours P1 at the start of the OLC scoring season. The Jeff Tinkler Trophy is presented to the MSC OLC Classic Novice Class Contest winner. Justin Gillespie was the 2010 winner with a 259 OLC points in 6 flights.

FAI-OLC Contest Rules (in the style of the FAI rules)

The maximum distance FAI triangle will be placed in the recorded, closed circuit flight track. The shortest leg has to be at least 28% of the total distance, or if the total distance is more than 500 km, then the shortest leg has to be at least 25% and the longest leg can be a maximum of 45% of the total distance. The flight track counts as a closed circuit if there is at least one valid GPS fix within one km of the starting point.

The minimum score must be 50 points; flights with fewer points are displayed in the daily list, but are not scored. The raw points are multiplied by 100 and then divided by the applicable DAeC Index. The resulting final points are rounded to two decimal digits. The distance around three waypoints is scored with 1 raw point per kilometre.

 Speed-OLC Contest Rules

The scoring distance is calculated on OLC-Classic-Rules. Sprint start point and sprint end point are positioned such that the sum of distances between sprint start point and sprint end point becomes as large as possible. End of sprint may be chosen a maximum of 150 minutes after start of sprint. Sprint start point and sprint end point must each be recorded as GPS fixes on the flight track. Sprint turnpoints correspond to 3 turnpoints of the OLC-Classic-scoring, which must be positioned between sprint start and sprint end

The average speed (points) of each individual flight is the sum of the distances from sprint start, around up to three turnpoints, to the sprint end divided DAeC index increased by 100, multiplied by 200 and divided by 2.5h: [formula: Points = km / 2,5 * 200 / (Index+100) The OLC-League-average-speed per round for a club is calculated from the sum of the three highest average speeds of all different pilots of a club. Only flights with an average of min 20 km/h will be scored.

October 16 2004 to October 10 2005

2005 was the third year for the Manitoba Soaring Council On-Line Contest. The contest was based on the Aerokurier International Online Competition (OLC) and the Canadian Decentralized National Competition (CDNC). All three contests ran from October 16th 2004 to October 15th 2005.  Each pilot’s best six flights were used to calculate their national, regional, and Manitoba scores. Seven pilots from the Winnipeg Gliding Club participated.

Poor weather limited the number of Manitoba flights significantly in 2005. Only one pilot achieved a full slate of 6 flights in Manitoba.

Scores for each pilot are tabulated below for the MSC-OLC, CDNC, CDNC SK-MB region, and Aerokurier contests.

MSC OLC

Matt Chislett finished in first place in the MSC Online Contest with a 6-flight total of 781.02 points. The longest flight of the year was on September 7 when Russ Flint flew 219 km, earning him 215 OLC points.

CDNC OLC

Wilfred Kruger from the SOSA club was the winner. Russ Flint was the top Manitoban, finishing in 42nd place. Jay Allardyce finished in 3rd place in the Junior category while Bruce Armstrong finished in 6th place in the Novice category.

CDNC OLC – SK/MB Regional results

Orlan Dowdeswell from the Regina Gliding and Soaring Club won the CDNC SK-MB regional competition. Matt Chislett finished in third place.
